Hello world, I am back! Well, I was never really gone but I will say that I am going to be changing things up from now on. For those of you who don’t know me, I am book reviewer who goes by the moniker of Genre Minx, which I routinely shorten to Minx, and for the longest time I had a blog called The Genre Minx Book Reviews. I have a bio on the right side that sums me up very well but the biggest thing to know is that I love to read books and talk about books. Even better is when I can introduce you to new books. That excites me to no end! I like to be a book matchmaker of sorts.
As I am sure it was for all of you, 2020 was a reflective year for me and I started to feel overwhelmed and burned out from all the minutia of running a website. I took some time off from reading and reviewing in order to see if after 5 years I wanted to continue. I did plan to stop, I even sent emails with my intentions to several authors and bloggers I had worked with over the years. I was going to be done at the end of 2020 and that was that.
Obviously, that was not that. I would find myself at odd times composing posts in my head or wanting to share my thoughts on a book I had come across. Still, I took the better part of a month off from the idea of reviewing and questioned what I really wanted. I was sure that I was burnt out on this hobby of mine but at some point, I had to face up to the fact that I actually missed it and now, here I am…again
It was not that easy though. What I decided was that I wanted something different but in essence I still wanted to be a book reviewer. I wanted to make it fun for me again. I had myself so tightly scheduled and took on so much that it felt like a job. All the behind the scenes work to get a post out can be quite time consuming. Then because I was self-hosted, when a link broke or a plugin went a little wild, I had to figure things out and fix them. Which felt like all the time because when I went self-hosted in 2017 I knew little to nothing about it and made a TON of mistakes that would crop up from time to time. I lived and I learned.
For the last month I have been switching back to a hosted website and that involved exporting data, importing data, and then sorting through the entire kitten caboodle to make final decisions on what I should keep. It was really, really, really hard for me to let over 1,000 reviews go to the data heap. It just felt wrong to me because I wanted to save them all, ha ha ha, but, For.The.Love, the work to do that would have been over 100 hours and that is being conservative. It was too much to do on top of the time I needed to spend getting the new site designed and functional. Luckily, my reviews still live on through Goodreads and retailers, so they are not lost forever.
Now, though, we are getting to the fun stuff! I have a whole new design, shortened name, and new website address. Starting fresh, one would say, and my plan for 2021 and beyond is to keep the posts simple. I won’t be adding a lot of links and unnecessary tags. Sheesh, I think I had a tagging problem for years. Now my categories and tags are going to be simpler. One thing I did add to this new blog is a column on the left side that has four different categories. In case you missed it, because you were so jazzed to be hearing from me again, the categories are there to give you information at a click of your mouse that you might find useful. All you will have to do is click on any of the grey category bars to see all the books in any of these categories.
You can thank my friend, Ambi, for this upgrade because, though she liked my previous site, she said it was akin to going down a metaphorical rabbit hole. I had a ton of books reviewed but there was no easy way to find things. Yikes, but she was sooo right. Sigh, sometimes you just have to take a step back to see things in front of your face. To that end, I included a tag cloud on the right side of this new site where you can look at your specific interests by tag. Hopefully these changes I have made will make this site more user friendly.
Whew, that was a mouthful! Thank you for sticking with me to the end of this post. I know it was a long one but I had quite a few things to cover. I appreciate you for however long you have been a subscriber. I appreciate you if this is the first time you have stumbled onto my site. Also, if you have ever had any website woes, you can share it with me. I can commiserate with you on a level. It has been a bear of an experience for me but moving forward it will be much simpler. Stay tuned for what is coming next and, in the meantime, I would love to hear from you.
