The war everyone thought was over is just beginning.
Kira Forrest is a survivor. She’s risen above the pain of her beginnings to become a war hero only to leave it all behind in the pursuit of a simple life. Now a salvager, she makes a living sifting through the wreckage of dead alien ships from a war that nearly brought humanity to its knees.
After her ship takes damage, she’s forced to re-route to a space station where her past and present collide with dangerous consequences.
Kira’s existence holds the key to a faltering peace treaty with the Tuann—a technologically advanced alien race who dislikes and distrusts all humans. Winning her freedom should be easy, but a powerful and relentless Tuann warrior stands in her way. Deceiving him seems impossible, especially when he strays dangerously close to secrets she struggles to hide.
Can Kira reconcile the pain of her past with the possibilities of her future? The fate of two races depends on her success.

I think I was surfing around Goodreads looking for a new book to read, really desiring something in the science fiction realm, when I came across Rules of Redemption. Everything from the cover to the synopsis grabbed my interest but I never expected that I would love this book as much as I did! Kira Forrest is the kind of character that I love to spend time with. She is intriguing, daring, and loyal, even when her loyalty was not returned. She may have been a salvager, preferring the company of machines to people, but underneath all her defenses she was a character who felt things deeply. I just loved her!
There was quite a bit of tension in this book and there were many times that I felt very angry for Kira because she was being used as a pawn. I was 100% team Kira and didn’t care for the humans who were using her or the aliens who demanded her presence, also against her will. I just felt that everything taking place was very unfair to Kira and I wanted nothing more than for her to find a way to flip both sets of detainers the metaphorical bird. Though, if that had happened the story would not have been as appealing as it turned out to be, hindsight and all that.
That conflict needed to be there in order to peel away the layers of protection that Kira had wrapped around herself. The more exposed Kira became the greater her depth as a character. Now there was more to this story than constant turmoil between Kira and those wishing to use her. She had an AI sidekick named Jin that was hilarious and they made a great team together. Do you enjoy snappy dialogue and witty banter? This book delivers on that score. There was a slight romance element but it was introduced very slowly and it was never an overwhelming part of the plot. Although, I will admit that I am more than a little eager to see where the romance will go in book two!
Overall what appealed to me in Rules of Redemption was Kira’s character and the part that she was playing between two species, as well as the long game she was playing for herself. Each chapter in this book came with surprises and very little of it was truly predictable. In the end, I came to love not only Kira but those who had tried to subdue her as well because there was also so much more to them than disclosed with first appearances. Every single page of Rules of Redemption was entertaining in one form or another and I can’t wait to dive into the next book in The Firebird Chronicles!!

About the Author:
Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later, and I threw my cookies at her head. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.
Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companions, Loki and Odin.
