Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha

Synopsis and Details:

Nina is an information broker with a mission–she and her team of mercenary librarians use their knowledge to save the hopeless in a crumbling America.

They’re on a deadly collision course, and the passion that flares between them only makes it more dangerous. They could burn down the world, destroying each other in the process…

Or they could do the impossible: team up.

Review with Rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Super soldiers, clones, genetic manipulation, and romance, if those words pique your interest then Deal with the Devil is a story that you will enjoy. The setting for this story was a dystopian United States after the solar flares of 2042 had thrown civilization into utter chaos. TechCorp was in control of Atlanta, Georgia, and the Protectorate was in charge of squashing the morale that was starting to bubble up on the outskirts. Unfortunately, not much was explained about the solar flares, other than they caused the decline of civilization, the focus was more on the characters, specifically Nina and Knox, and the precarious situation that they all were brought into by an unknown outside force.

There was definitely a high-stakes feeling to this story and from the very beginning there was plenty of action to move the plot along. In between the moments of action was where the reader was able to get to know the characters better and they were all quite likable. Also, at the start of each chapter there was a snippet from various record transcripts that were about one or more of the characters involved and I enjoyed those. It was glimpses of the past that showed the development of the characters in the present. I will say, though, that pretty much everything in this story came back to Nina, Knox, and their undeniable attraction to each other.

There was a mystery element that had the reader wondering who, indeed, was the mysterious force pulling the strings and what was the end game?! To some, it might be an obvious conclusion, but for others they may not guess until the reveal. The characters were all interesting and I liked getting to know them better but I wasn’t drawn to one over the other. As Nina and Garrett were the de facto leaders, I wish I would have been more engaged with what was taking place between them and to them but I wasn’t. They had chemistry but nothing that would inspire my adoration of them, which I had been hoping for. Overall, Deal with the Devil was an enjoyable science fiction story that was exciting and action-packed but the romance element was the primary driver of the plot.
