Review: Junkyard Cats by Faith Hunter

Junkyard Cats by Faith Hunter

Synopsis and Details:

From the author of the best-selling Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood series comes a tough new heroine who is far more than she seems.

After the Final War, after the appearance of the Bug aliens and their enforced peace, Shining Smith is still alive, still doing business from the old scrapyard bequeathed to her by her father. But Shining is now something more than human. And the scrapyard is no longer just a scrapyard, but a place full of secrets that she has guarded for years.

This life she has built, while empty, is predictable and safe. Until the only friend left from her previous life shows up, dead, in the back of a scrapped Tesla warplane, a note to her clutched in his fingers – a note warning her of a coming attack.

Someone knows who she is. Someone knows what she is guarding. Will she be able to protect the scrapyard? Will she even survive? Or will she have to destroy everything she loves to keep her secrets out of the wrong hands?

Review with Rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Junkyard Cats is an Audible original audiobook and it is the first in a new series featuring Shining Smith, a woman who grew up in a biker gang, saw action in the Final War, and settled in a scrapyard that was once her father’s. Now if after reading the synopsis you are intrigued and would love to read this book but are not a fan of audiobooks, do not fret. You will get your chance, the word on the street is that this book will come out as a kindle book (hopefully you have kindle or a kindle app) in or around summer 2020. Also, yes, apparently there is a book 2 in this series as Ms. Hunter is reading from it when she is at ChattaCon 45. I know that makes me very happy, though I wish I could have been there for that reading 😃.

For fans of audiobooks I want to say that Khristine Hvam did a wonderful job narrating Junkyard Cats. She was the perfect voice for Shining and fingers crossed there will be a second audiobook with her as narrator. The story itself was addictive! I love Ms. Hunter’s work and was very excited to see what she had to offer in the science fiction genre and I was not disappointed. A huge focus of this story was Shining protecting what was hers from multiple aggressors who wanted what was hidden. Then there were the cats, heck yes, they were very cool! They were more than I expected and they were fascinating, hilarious at times, and maybe even a little scary. Also, if you love a post-apocalyptic setting with nanotech, robotics, bio-engineered insects, ridiculously advanced weaponry, and a touch of biker culture, then this story will appeal to you as well.

Guns were definitely blazing in this story but under all that gunfire there were subtle themes being introduced as well. As Shining brought out all the stops to keep what was hers safe, I learned a lot about her, her life to this point, and her motivations for the distance she kept from others. She was a very honorable character and there was a point in the story where you see a clear juxtaposition between who she is and who she could have been if she had made different choices, it was very interesting. Overall, I loved that Junkyard Cats delivered an action-packed fast-paced story that captivated my imagination but also had subtle themes woven throughout that made it a compelling story that I did not want to end. Definitely sign me up for the sequel, I want more of Shining Smith and her curious cats!
