Review with Rating:
Redclaw Security is a series that I have enjoyed reading very much. I was extremely excited to learn that there was a book coming out that was going to take me back to the beginning of this company and give me the roots of the organization. Bishop Takes Knight is the first book in the Redclaw Origins series and not only does it give insight into why the company came into creation but it also has a mystery thriller element that was quite suspenseful at times. The characters featured in this story were ones that I definitely wanted to know more about and they kept my interest from the start.
Rhett was a woman determined to make it on her own after the passing of her father and desertion of her mother. Things had not been going very well for her but that truly was related to her belief that she was no man’s plaything. Her refusal to be bullied into situations not to her liking left her unemployed more often than not. It was her search for employment that led her to be at the wrong place at the right time her, a serendipitous moment, although she didn’t realize it at the time. For reasons unknown to her, Rhett had been given a job at Redclaw Security and she was just grateful to have it.
At first, Rhett’s job was rather boring, but the happenings around the office were always very interesting to her. It didn’t take long for Rhett to become aware that there was more to Redclaw Security than she was privy to. It was this awareness that led to an opportunity allowing her to become something more in the company. All she had to do was prove that she could work as a field agent with a first assignment that should have been a piece of cake for her, as she already had a lead. With her self-confidence brimming, Rhett started out sure that she was going to prove how awesome she was only to realize that there was so much that she didn’t know and she was going to need all of her wits about her to stay alive.
Bishop Takes Knight was a thrilling story filled with danger, suspense, romantic tension, and plenty of humor. I loved the 1950’s setting and the story felt authentic to the timeframe the entire time. I loved how there was foreshadowing to technology that we enjoy today and how the origins of said technology had possibilities that stretched beyond anything we have ever considered. It was a very clever touch and I enjoyed it. In this story, there is plenty of tension between Knight and Bishop, some is romantic and some is just plan frustration. They were a great pair and it was a partnership that had many bumps along the way but that also made for an interesting story. Overall, Bishop Takes Knight is a swell historical fantasy that is a wonderful addition to the Redclaw world I am looking forward to seeing what is next!
