Review: The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Synopsis and Details:

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him….

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I know you are curious just like I was to know why, just WHY, did Alicia’s character stop speaking?! The title of “The Silent Patient” and it’s cover alone was a huge draw but ultimately it was the synopsis that had my imagination chugging away at high speed. You might think that with a character who is speechless that the story might drag a bit but let me reassure you that it absolutely does not! Alicia is silent but so much is learned about her through her thoughts and memories as well as characters from her past adding to her overall picture. She was truly a memorable character who has a lot to say, albeit silently of course, 🤣.

From the start you will be intrigued by Dr. Theo Faber. You will study his thoughts and choices trying to understand his motivation. It will be a huge boon to his career if he is able to engage Alicia in a verbal conversation but it really felt like he had a personal stake in her being able to speak again. Some may even say that he was borderline obsessive but that is what will grab your attention and keep it focused in this story. Trying to determine for yourself what his motivations are. Whether or not he is just an eager doctor looking for fame or is there something more going on than what is on the surface??

The Silent Patient was truly a captivating story that has plenty of twists and turns that will keep your eyes glued to the pages. I absolutely loved that I was caught up trying to decipher what truly took place that night between Alicia and her husband only to have all my guesses blown out of the water when the reveal finally took place. I did have my suspicions but I never would have guessed everything that took place. With the ending, everything just made sense and all I can say about that was that it was well played! I was shocked and can tell you that The Silent Patient is one thriller that I absolutely highly recommend!
