Review: A Protector in the Highlands by Heather McCollum

Protector in the Highlands by Heather McCollum

Synopsis and Details:

With few other options, Scarlet Worthington flees from her home in England to the wild Highlands of Scotland to help her sister run a school for ladies. There, Scarlet begins to rebuild her own shattered confidence by recruiting a fierce Campbell warrior to teach her and the students how to protect themselves from villains and scoundrels. The intimidating Aiden Campbell both infuriates Scarlet and ignites a fire inside her as she works closely with him to hone her new skills.

Burned in a fierce fire, set by English soldiers, Highland warrior, Aiden Campbell, has finally healed enough to take temporary command of his clan. That’s where his focus should be instead of dealing with the feisty, beautiful Sassenach who asks him to teach her students.

When Scarlet’s past stalks her up into Scotland, her nightmares come alive, and Aiden’s lessons are put to the test. With his own ghosts from the past making him despise English women, Aiden fights the inferno of passion that’s grown between them, a different kind of wild fire that could prove just as deadly.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Highland Roses School is quickly becoming my favorite historical romance series! I enjoyed the first book in this series, A Rose in the Highlands, but I loved this book even more! I was also looking forward to reading A Protector in the Highlands because it is Scarlet’s story. In book one, Scarlet ran from England like the hounds of hell were after her. Her sister, Evelyn, had wanted to leave for her own reasons but it was Scarlet’s frantic desire to leave as soon as possible that spurred on their journey to Scotland. It was never truly disclosed why Scarlet was so fearful or why she felt the need to leave but I was dying to understand her motivations. Now, I do understand and, oh be still my beating heart, was this story emotive.

Scarlet was a woman who had been traumatized and unfortunately it had caused her to pull into herself. She no longer acted like the sister that Evelyn remembered but Evelyn was hopeful that, given time, Scarlet would come around. Just when Scarlet was starting to feel safe, though, she was pulled into a situation that brought her past fears rearing back up again. Fortunately for her she had someone who was on her side, even though that in of itself was surprising because he had made it very clear that he did not like her. Well, he might have acted like he could have cared less but that was clearly not the truth.

“Look at me,” Aiden whispered, and she blinked open. “See who I am,” he said, his eyes kind and clear. “A man ye can trust not to take anything from ye that ye don’t want to give, Scarlet.”

Aiden Campbell was not a fan of English people, women in particular, but his reasons were deeply personal. Despite his attraction to Scarlet he was determined not to see her as anything more than a responsibility but that all changed when he saw a side to her that brought out the protector in him. Oh Aiden, 😍🥰 😘! What an amazing character you are. He had his own deep hurts and resentments but he did not let that stand in the way of protecting Scarlet or for feeling anger at the treatment she must have endured to cause her to be so fearful. I never thought that I would be swooning over his character because he was so unlikeable in the prequel, but his story was moving and I couldn’t help but love him by the end!

Scarlet may have started out as a scared lamb but soon she learned that she could rely on herself, to find her inner lioness and be a victim no longer. It was wonderful to see the changes that she brought to the Highland Roses and it made the story both fun and entertaining! The connection between Scarlet and Aiden still makes my heart beat faster and feel all sorts of swoony inside. I did love these characters but it wasn’t just Aiden and Scarlet that made this story amazing. I loved each of the Highland Roses that took part in this story. Each woman contributed to the overall plot and I can always get behind a book that has strong female characters. There is so much to love in A Protector in the Highlands and I highly recommend this story! I loved it!
